Heavenly Lake (Tianchi Lake) is located at the waist of Bogda Peak, which is at the center of Heavenly Mountain. In the middle of Bogda Peak, 110 km (68miles) east of Urumqi, nestles Heavenly Lake. The lake of 4.9 square kilometers abounds with wildlife and other natural resources. This crescent-shaped lake deserves its name, Pearl of Heavenly Mountain (Tianshan Mountain). With melted snow as its source, Heavenly Lake enjoys crystal water.

Located in the north-central part of the scenic area, Tianchi Lake is 1,910 meters above sea level, 3.3 kilometers long and one kilometer wide on average. The lake stores 160 million cubic meters of water all the year round. Tianchi Lake freezes up in late October and thaws in early May. In the meantime, the lake's surface is covered with ice one meter thick. In summer, the temperature stays at around 20 degrees C. It is a pleasant and comfortable place. Tianchi is not only a summer resort, but also a good alpine skating rink in winter. Coming from a glacier, the water of Tianchi Lake is pure and the ice surface is smooth. It is a lake formed by melted snow. It is 6,233 feet above sea level and the depth of waters in some parts reaches 295 feet. It covers an area of 1.9 square miles surrounded by towering dragon spruces and snow-capped mountains. With a gentle breeze blowing most of the time, it is an ideal place for skating competitions.

This giant bowl of sapphire water is surrounded by mountains with majestic snow-crowned peaks reflecting on the lake, making the beauties of the lake and mountains an integral whole. Mountainsides are covered by green and luxuriant pines and cypresses extending as far as the eye can see. The open spaces between trees are embellished by rainbows of flowers, dotted with white yurts, and roamed by flocks of sheep that look like clouds floating past. Boaters on the lake see the ever-changing silvery mountains soaring into the blue sky, their slopes highlighted with verdant pasture and flamboyant wild flowers.
